Forget Me Not Christening Bonnet with Bobbin Lace
This darling baby bonnet is made to order and hand-embroidered with a dainty pattern of forget-me-not and trimmed with antique Russian bobbin lace, beautiful for the ride home from the hospital or Baby's christening. The pattern is from a Massachusetts catalog dated 1886, and has been embroidered in a style consistent with the period, with soft open petals, yellow centers, and green leaves. The lace was made by hand (though not by me), in the traditional craft of bobbin lace. This lace is exquisitely dainty with its pattern of tiny scallops.
Forget me nots are a dainty flower, much loved for their great beauty and humble demeanor, and were a favorite among the Victorians for embroidering on baby goods. Blue is the traditional color, though they can also be pink or white, according to variety. These embroidered flowers can be done in any color of the rainbow. If there's a specific shade you'd like, please ask! I have over 450 colors and can send a color card upon request. This bonnet is sized for 0-3 months, 3-6 months, 6-12, 12-18, and 18-24 months.
This baby cap is fully lined, and made inside and out in pure white Irish linen, which is embroidered with the tiny flowers by hand prior to being cut and sewn together. It is very soft and grows softer with use, launders well, and will not pill up. The embroidery is cotton, and the bonnet can be machine laundered on a delicate cycle (preferably in a laundry bag, to avoid pulling on the lace). The brim is stiffened with a bit of interfacing, and the ribbon that fastens under the chin is double-faced satin ribbon, in a soft ivory to match the antique lace. There are twenty-seven tiny blossoms embroidered on this baby set.
This linen bonnet is an heirloom piece, and a wonderful gift to be passed down. One woman, who is due to deliver in a couple months, will be saving this bonnet for her daughter's wedding day, when she'll carefully cut apart the embroidered panels to use the forget-me-nots as her daughter's 'something blue', someday. Either as part of their wedding or for their own children in the future, they'll treasure the piece you set aside for them now.
Due to the extensive embroidery and hand-piecing, please allow 2-3 weeks for the creation of this baby bonnet. This item is not eligible for our rush order option.
