This afghan is hand embroidered with an intricate pattern in a traditional style. This style of work, called huck embroidery, huck darning, or Swedish weaving; leaves little to be seen on the back. Two wide bands of embroidery fill the ends of the blanket; a diamond motif adds lightness and a small repeating band in the center ties the design together.

This throw is made out of white monk's cloth, which is a thick, 100% cotton cloth with great texture. The embroidery is done with four colors of Peruvian wool, ranging from a light lake blue, through denim, ocean blue, and a midnight blue in our Moody Blues palette. All the colors are heathered (containing filaments of other, harmonizing colors within the yarn itself) for a rich depth of color. Creamy, unbleached monk's cloth is also available, as are many more colors and even a larger sofa size (50x60). We love creating custom designs.

This size throw (approx. 30 by 50 inches) makes a beautiful heirloom baby blanket. We'll back it with a soft minky fabric that will delight baby. Minky is a non-pilling, incredibly soft polyester fabric that is often made into warm, soft baby goods. The blanket pictured above is lined with soft white minky, painstakingly quilted between the threads of the monk's cloth so as to not interfere with the embroidery and the edges are bound by hand in a coordinating color.

Not a wool fan? As this blanket is made to order, we can work with you to find colors and yarns that match your room and your requirements. Just shoot us a message!

This blanket has been pre-washed to shrink the cotton and tighten the weave. To keep the wool stitching clearly defined, please hand wash with a mild detergent, and lay flat or line dry.

Care information

Linen handkerchiefs may be washed via delicate cycle in a washing machine (no bleach) or for best results, by hand. Iron hot, with steam, on the backside of the work. Any stitches pushed out of place from the iron can gently be prodded back into place. A cotton or mesh laundry bag will help protect your piece from getting snagged.

Temari should not be washed, just dusted if necessary. If needed, you can wet a cloth in hot water and wring it out quite well, and use that to spot-wash. Temari are made of fibers all the way through, so a wash or soak would mean that the inside would never dry.

Our embroidered blankets are made with wool, and should be handwashed gently in cool water.

Goldwork embroidery should only be washed by a professional. Other embroidery is best cleaned as for temari (especially framed hoop work) though wearable accessories may be put through the wash on a gentle cycle or hand washed.
